The Books of Beginning: By John Stephens
The Books of Beginning. Hmm. That does sound weird right? And thats what I thought the first time I saw it. But as it looked kinda interesting, I took a chance.
The Books of Beginning are a trilogy in which the first is the one I read. It talks of 3 orphans, 2 girls and a boy who have traveled from one orphanage to the other with only each other to cling on to.
Kate (14), the oldest one has to look after her brothers and sisters as well as assure them that their parents, of whom she is the only one who has a memory, are coming back for them. It had been 10 years since the day when her mother had made her promise to protect her brother and sister.
Finally, when Mrs Crumley, the caretaker of their present orphanage, gives them a chance to get adopted, they refuse, still clinging on to the fact that their parents will come back for them.
Finally, she sends them to an orphanage in Cambridge Falls, owned by a Dr Pym. There, they are picked up by Abraham, who supposedly works there.
As they're in the carriage, they ask Abraham how many kids are there in the orphanage. To their astonishment he says there are only 3, including them. They also notice that there are no kids in the town, and that Cambridge Falls is a barren, unfriendly place.
As they arrive, they are "greeted" by a Mrs Sallow who is the caretaker of the orphanage. Since the mansion is so big, they decide to explore it and they come upon a study, and a book: a emerald journal. As they go upstairs, Michael, the second oldest, keeps a photo inside the journal.
Thus Emma, Michael and Kate are spirited to the past to a time when Cambridge Falls was at the verge of its downfall. There they find that the children of the town were being herded by creatures called Screechers (known for the scream they make).
The whole operation was managed by a young teenage girl who calls herself the Countess. The Countess planned to blackmail the men into searching for something that she wanted that was buried or hidden somewhere in Cambridge Falls.
