Airframe: by Michael Crichton
Yeah, yeah. He's the same guy who wrote Jurassic Park....
So basically, Airframe is based on a lady called Casey Singleton who is vice-president for Quality Assurances, Norton Aircraft. She is investigating an in flight accident that killed 3 passengers and left 56 injured.
The story starts with a Norton aircraft flying from Hong Kong to Denver. The pilot requests emergency landing at Los Angeles Airport, stating the emergency to be "severe turbulence". He reports that no crew members were hurt but 3 passengers were dead.
The death of the passengers seems absurd to the manufacturers as the Norton N-22 was a plane with an excellent safety record, that added to the fact that the pilot was highly trained; leading to the fact that human error was unlikely. Passengers and crew members are questioned for their accounts and it seems to lead to a technical problem that was thought to have been fixed years ago.
As Vice President of Quality Assurances at Norton Aircraft, it's Casey's job to save the reputation of the design and of Norton Manufacturers. At the same time, though, Casey has to deal with an arrogant junior executive Bob Richman, assigned to assist her.
As Casey digs inside, she finds a deeper plan at work. Her junior executive, Bob Richman and another Norton executive, John Marder were secretly planning to take over the company from the CEO Harold Edgarton. Not only that, once they had seized control of the company, they planned to torpedo the company's deal with China. After that, they planned to sell the company for an even bigger aircraft deal with South Korea. This would have eventually destroyed the entire company. Luckily, Casey manages to thwart their plan and stop them before it was too late.
Casey also finds the true cause of the incident, which was not a mistake in the design but a human error.
Read on to find out more about Casey's investigation...
