Alex Rider-Series

Alex Rider- Super Spy: by Anthony Horowitz

The Alex Rider series are amazing spy novels. I did not expect to be so engrossed in these books. In fact, I just took them to pass time. But again, Anthony Horowitz is full of surprises.

The novel starts with Alex finding out that his uncle, and guardian, was hit by a truck in a car accident due to his not wearing a seat belt. This strikes Alex and his housekeeper, Jack, as strange. Alex decides to investigate. He discovers his uncle's car at a wrecking yard and finds that the car had no dents. Rather, it had bullet holes.

Then he is asked to meet with his uncle's employees, from the bank "Royal & General" which is actually M16 headquarters.
The head, Alan Blunt and his assistant, Tulip Jones, inform Alex about his uncle's job s a spy: A successful Lebanese business man, Herod Sayle, had built a revolutionary new type of computer, called Storm-breaker. Coincidentally, Mr Sayle had studies in school with the future Prime Minister. Herod Sayle had announced that he would provide these computers to every secondary school in the United Kingdom as well as an activation ceremony in the Science Museum.

M16, suspicious of his intentions, had sent Ian Rider to investigate. Ian had found something and had been on his way to report to the M16 when Yassen Gregorovich (an assassin) has killed him. The M16, now panicked, forcibly recruited Alex as a spy and gave him intense SAS training as a spy. They then disguised him as a student who had won the oppurtunity to visit Herod Sayle's plant through a competition.

Alex is provided with gadgets which have hidden purposes. Initially, the trip goes well, and Sayle gives him a tour through the plant. Ales noted down strange happenings: strange metal cases are being carefully transported into trucks, and when somebody dropped it, Gregorovich shot him.

But eventually, Sayle grows to dislike him. Soon, Alex is caught and tranquilized and Herod explains his plan to him: when he was in school, he had been bullied due to his accent and skin colour. The leader of the bullies had been none other than the future Prime Minister.

Thus, Sayle devised a plan to embarrass the Prime Minister. When he activates the computers, a virus, a potent strain of smallpox, will be released in every school in the United Kingdom, thus killing all the children.

Alex is then left handcuffed to a radiator until Nadia Vole, a lady working at the plant, pretends to be on his side, until she traps him in an aquarium with a killer jellyfish. Alex escapes using one of his gadgets and rushes to the Science Museum to stop the activation of the computers.

Alex makes an awesome entrance to the Museum using a parachute and, using a gun he had stolen from someone at the plant, he shoots blindly at the computer. Ms Jones saves his life by ordering security not to open fire on him. M16 then recall all Storm-breaker computers with excuses on safety.

Due to his success in this mission, M16 continue to use Alex Rider for their missions and thus the story continues...
