Lorien Legacies: by Pittacus Lore
I love the first book of these series. The name of the first book is : "I am Number Four". I am pretty sure you would have heard the name or at least seen the movie.
I think this is an awesome books for teenagers and pre teens.
Okay. So before I start with the actual plot of the story, let me tell you the background.
Earth is one of the last eighteen life-sustaining planets in the universe. Two of the others are called Lorien and Mogadore.
Lorien society comprises of two types of people: Garde, who have magical powers (legacies) which they use to fight in the war, and Cêpan, who are responsible for governing the country and performing boring jobs. The Garde are much more powerful than humans, they are much stronger, much faster and much more agile. In their teenage years, they develop legacies like invisibility, resistance to flames and more.
Lorien also has shape shifting creatures called Chimera.
All was going well in Lorien until Mogadorians (people of Mogadore) come and invade it and covet its resources. A rocket is sent out of Lorien with 9 children (Garde) and 9 Cêpan who are to act as their guard.
The children disguise as humans and hide while the Mogadorians try to track each of them down. They each possess an amulet through which, as long as they stay apart, they can only be killed in order, one through to nine. Every time one is killed, the others receive a scar.
The story starts with the death of Number Three. Number Four, who assumes the name of John Smith, knows he is next. John and Henri (his guardian) next travel to Paradise, Ohio.

Plot

There, in high school, John befriends Sam, whose father was a man who believed in aliens. In the college, John also gets attracted to Sarah Hart, which starts his enmity with Mark James.
Soon, John's legacies start developing, and he gets the power of resistance to flames. At home, Henri trains every part of his body to develop the resistance to flames.
The next power that John acquires is lumen, which is the power to produce light from his hands.
During the Halloween festival, Sam tells Henri and John that he knows about Mogadorians from a magazine, called They Walk Among Us.
Henri tells John that they must leave Paradise but John refuses, because of his relationship with Sarah. Henri finds out where the magazine is printed and goes to investigate. John becomes agitated when Henri does not answer his text messages and calls Sam. Sam and John successfully rescue Henri from the building and escape just in time from the Mogadorians.
By this time, Henri and John tell Sam about their planet and themselves and Sam swears not to tell anyone.
After a few months, a fire arouses in Mark's house and Sarah is trapped. John rescues her using his powers and tells her about himself and the importance of keeping his secret confidential. He lies to Henri about how much he told Sarah. But later on, a video is posted on Youtube showing his rescuing Sarah. Henri, furious, demands that they leave immediately.
John rushes off to the school, with the knowledge that Sarah is in danger; he is later joined by Mark, Henri and Bernie Kosar, his dog - who is in fact a Chimera.
In the school Number Six (who has been looking for them ever since the death if Number Three) joins them and a furious battle ensues.
Number Six shows her power of invisibility, and controlling the weather.
