The Power of Five

The Power of Five: by Anthony Horowitz

"The Power of Five" are one of my favorite series. They have a twist at every corner and have the saddest ending in the world but still, I think the books are AMAZING!

The first book, Raven's Gate, is about 14 year old  Matthew Freeman who lived with his aunt in Ipswich after his parents died in a car crash which, peculiarly, he seemed to know about. Matt lives as a juvenile delinquent.

But one of his thefts goes horribly wrong when his cowardly friend stabs the security guard and flees.
Matthew is arrested and given a choice: go to jail or live in the country with a lady called Jayne Deverril.
He realizes that he should have chosen to go to jail after finding out that the country is inhabited by witches whose greater purpose is to serve the Old Ones. Matt finds out that he cannot escape as he keeps returning to the same village.

Matthew finds out that the Old Ones are grotesque creatures that feed on pain and misery and who want to ruin the present world. Those who serve them expect a reward. Matthew finds a journalist called Richard Cole in that village and tells him all he knows. Richard doesn't believe Matt at first but soon he finds out that Matt was right and he helps him. Matthew and Richard escape from the village and their relationship develops into a brotherly one that cannot be destroyed.

They find out there was a war between the Old Ones and the Gatekeepers (five 15-year-old children with special powers) about ten thousand years ago. The children formed a circle and, with the power of five, defeated the Old Ones. The children formed a gate called the Raven's Gate to keep the Old Ones caged in but with the help of the witches, the gate was almost opened.

In the second book, Matt goes to Peru, to close the second gate before the Old Ones can get out. There he finds Pedro, another of the five, the one who can heal. So far, Matt has found that he can move, crash and control objects. Matt goes to Nazca to confront the Old Ones and greatly injures himself and the king of the Old Ones, but he finds out that all of the five are needed and thus he and and Pedro get ready to find the others.

Matt is automatically voted as the leader and in the end of the second book, the twins, Scott and Jamie end up in front of them. The twins have the power to communicate with each other through their minds and also to control other people's thoughts, thus controlling their actions. Scott had gone through an intense torture and thus Matt leaves him with Pedro when he and Jamie set out to find the last, Scarlett.

Scott feels left out and gets angry with Matt, and himself. Thus the story continues...
