Prey

Prey: by Michael Crichton

Prey is about the use of nano technology.

The novel starts with Jack Foreman, an unemployed software programmer who was fired for discovering an internet scandal. Due to his unemployment, Jack is reduced to be a house husband while his wife is working in a high tech nano robotics company called Xymos.

Due to a new project at work, Julia says that she will be home later than usual. Jack suspects her of having an affair and so watches her carefully. One day, Julia gets injured in a car accident and Jack is offered a job at Xymos, because the project manager, Ricky, was having problems with the software of the nano robots.

Ricky refuses to show Jack the source code for the nano robots and later claims that the builders forgot to install a vent in a certain building. As a result, swarms of these nano robots escape into the desert, evolving and forming swarms. They take a predatory behavior, attacking and killing animals in the wild using a code that Jack himself had worked on.

One day, the swarms kill a rabbit outside the complex; Jack and Mae, his co-worker, go outside to investigate.
Once outside, Mae and Jack find that the rabbit dies of suffocation when the swarms blocked its bronchial tubes. When Mae goes inside to get equipment, Jack is attacked by the swarms.

He barely makes it inside before he becomes unconscious from shock. Due to Jack's persuasion, the team reluctantly decides to destroy the swarms.

In the end, Jack finds out an astounding plot that was going on behind his back... Read the book to find out...
